What you need to know:

We obviously think Newfoundland Dogs are the best, but they aren't necessarily the best match for everyone! It's important to know all about this breed of dog so you can anticipate the time, money, and energy necessary to give them the best possible life. Although temperament wise they are ideal family dogs, they are EXTRA large which means more food, bigger vet bills, expensive supplements, and A LOT of hair that requires extensive grooming. Oh, and have we mentioned the occasional drooling...?

History

Originating in Canada, the Newfoundland dog came to be as a companion for fishermen. The XL strong build of these working dogs paired with their double coat and webbed toes made them perfect to help with water based tasks like pulling in heavy fishing nets or jumping in to rescue people fallen overboard the ships!

Eventually, they were also utilized around homesteads to pull carts (just like miniature horses!) and worked into more family type environments with similar strength based tasks.

They have always had loyal, people pleasing temperaments with a brave and gentle demeaner that made them ideal for family dogs that also served a working purpose. These days, water rescue and cart pulling are still very prevalent in the Newfy world, and there are even national competitions and certifications for them! Newfy Needs

Exercise

Just like all dogs, keeping your Newfoundland active and well exercised is beyond important! Yes, they're typically known to be pretty laid back and low energy dogs, but during their adolescent years they can still be pretty rambunctious! The lineage that we are specifically building is more of an athletic and active Newf to promote a healthier lifestyle for them, much like the original breed that was used as a working animal. It's crucial to be aware of the type of exercise you're doing to be mindful of joint health and safety as well. Click the link to get ideas for some fun sports & activities you could try!

Feeding & Supplements

With big breeds come big bags of food! While they're growing from puppy to majestic adults, they can eat up to 6+ cups a day! Obviously, we recommend high quality foods to ensure the longevity of your dog, but there are also supplements to consider throughout their life that prolong joint, digestive, heart, skin & coat health. All of this combined can really add up, so ensure you're ready to give them EVERYTHING they need! Click the link to the right to see what MY doggos get as a recommendation.

Grooming

With their large double coat, it's important to stay on top of intensive grooming to ensure they don't end up with mats or skin issues. If you'd like to take up the task on your own, click the link to the right to learn more about the typical routine for regular grooming. If you'd rather use a professional, be prepared for a hefty bill of $180 - $300 per groom. Newfies also "Blow their Coat" several times a year with the changes in weather, and trust me when I say there isn't a vacuum in the world that can keep up!
